7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Great size, excellent battery life, April 7, 2012 By Brian White (Oklahoma City) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: HP DM1-4170US 11.6-Inch Laptop (Charcoal Gray) (Personal Computers) Bought this laptop instead of a newer iPad (3?) -- was almost the same price. The screen is fine, the size excellent (although build quality is plastic everywhere), and the battery life with the second-gen i3 chip is fantastic. Tried a few ultrabooks but wanted something under 13" -- and this 11.6" size works perfectly. At right over $500, it's a great piece of tech for the price. And, a proper 500GB HD! I can't run around carrying external hard drives since most SSDs are so small -- so it's nice to have a good, old-fashioned HD in here. Yes, it's not as fast -- but space is more important to me.
Has all the ports I need, has the weight I need, and the integrated Bluetooth I need. Thanks HP.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Fantastic ultraportable laptop with great battery life, April 18, 2012 By Alex (San Franciso, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: HP DM1-4170US 11.6-Inch Laptop (Charcoal Gray) (Personal Computers) Can't be beat for the price. Battery lasts for at least 6 hours of moderate activity. I replaced HDD with 128GB SSD and W7 now loads under 10s. This laptop has everything I need. Bluetooth, WiDi, very nice vivid LCD screen which can tilt 180 degree. 3 USB ports (two are on the same side - great for external hard drives and burners). Feels like a good quality and well thought out product. Also, no need to unscrew the cover to replace HDD, memory, etc. The cover just slides out while holding the battery release button. The audio is very loud in both speakers and headphones (make sure to select loudness equilization under sound settings).
9 of 14 people found the following review helpful Linux video and bios, March 2, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: HP DM1-4170US 11.6-Inch Laptop (Charcoal Gray) (Personal Computers) If you are planning on running Linux on this laptop, the first thing you need to do is check the bios version that is installed on it. If it is F.12, do not wipe your windows partition yet. Update to F.13 via the windows updater. I just spent an hour re-installing windows so that I could update the bios so that I could run Linux. LOL.
If you're running the F.12 bios, you'll run into all kinds of video errors trying to install and run Linux.
Now that I'm updated, it is happily chugging away with Ubuntu 11.10. Going to try Mint in a min... :)
Random Note: If you want to replace the ram or the HDD, just push the battery unlock switch all the way to the side, it takes a little force, and the bottom cover will slide forward. Pretty simple. You do not need to pry on the bottom. :P
This seems like a sturdy little unit despite being all plastic. The keyboard has good feel, but is missing the SysRq key. I don't have any big complaints about... Read more
