Super Hardware....... I don't know of a laptop that doesn't have some kind of negative, they all do.
This machine is powerful. It has an Intel processor with integrated video plus a descrete ATI/AMD
card. And that is the problem.
There are many of these hybrids coming out and they have not perfected the BIOS.
You can't choose to use only one of the GPU's in the BIOS which is very bad. The software interface
to change between video options basically stinks.
It is a very good laptop but is hobbled by the BIOS and software when it comes to the video options.
The Intel HD 3000 integrated GPU is good, the AMD 6550M descrete GPU is very good but in the end they
are both limited by the weak BIOS and software.
It is a very good laptop except for this dual graphics issue.
Update: You can choose to make the integrated GPU (Intel) the only video card in the BIOS but not the faster and better AMD one.

Alas, there is a fundamental flaw that makes this notebook less than appealing: Switchable Graphics
It starts with a good intention: Use the integrated graphics adapter (Intel HD 3000) for tasks that do not require a powerful GPU and switch over to the AMD/ATI GPU for more demanding tasks (such as games and other tasks that require hardware acceleration).
With the version of Windows installed on this machine, it works as intended, mostly.
Try to install Windows 7 Professional on this machine and you won't be able to install the drivers provided by Acer or AMD/ATI for the AMD/ATI GPU.
That is problem #1: You are stuck with the version of Windows that is factory installed.
The BIOS has a Graphic Mode option: You can set it to "Switchable" or "Integrated". You cannot set it to "Discreet". So, if you wanted to only use the powerful ATI/AMD GPU that is advertised in... Read more

I have owned this laptop for a couple of months now... it is a real performer. I use it for CFD and CADD work (heavy duty engineering software that requires a lot of power in both number crunching and video performance). This machine does NOT disappoint. I also use it for mild entertainment value. It plays movies to my HD TV or right there on the GIANT 17.3" monitor... I can play WoW and AoC on full graphics with no slow downs... However, it WILL NOT run games like BF3. I should have checked the website before buying BF3, because it will not run without the latest catalyst drivers from AMD and you can't get those for this machine (I tried to "force" them in with 3rd party software, and other tricks gamers use only to end up losing the use of my AMD (ati) chip altogether for a few days).
